11Alive News has learned that Evelyn Lowery, wife of civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery, has been hospitalized in critical condition.
A family spokesperson says the 85-year-old Mrs. Lowery was admitted to a local hospital Wednesday night after suffering a stroke. Dr. Lowery and other family members are at her side.
The family issued this statement:
During the night time hours, Mrs. Lowery, wife of long time civil rights leader , Rev. Joseph Lowery, was rushed to a local hospital having suffered a stroke. She is in critical condition and is currently undergoing treatment.
As a family of faith, the Lowerys remain in prayer for their mother’s recovery. Rev. Lowery remains by his wife’s side and asks for the community’s continued prayers.
A spokesman for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference says they have the Lowery family in their prayers.
