DOWNTOWN CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –

It’s a dead zone on Euclid Avenue between East 9th and 12th.

Buildings are falling apart, doors are chained shut, windows are busted, building names have faded from view, and The Marques are beyond beat up.

No one looking at the area in its current condition would envision it as green space but the fortunes of this woeful stretch of Euclid are quickly changing and it’s long overdue.

“This is the connective tissue between lower Euclid and Playhouse Square and vitally important from that perspective,” says Joe Marinucci, CEO of the Downtown Alliance.

Marinucci says that a stretch of five buildings has already been environmentally cleaned out and construction will soon begin on a 260-room Le Meridian Hotel which will include retail opportunities on the ground floor.

“We’re anticipating a formal announcement by the developer, all the t’s are crossed i’s dotted and the fact that they’re going to begin construction,” says Marinucci.

On the north side construction has already begun eighty apartments going in the old 1010 building and 35 more in the Truman Building.

9th and Euclid is the heart of the city and soon will reflect that.

Marinucci says that people in the downtown area after work will all of a sudden start to see people out and about walking dogs, people in hotels coming and going and permanent residents in addition to the office markets.
