CLEVELAND – Ground was broke Tuesday for a new RTA rapid station, called the Little Italy-University Circle neighborhood of Cleveland at the corner of Mayfield and Random Roads.

This new rapid station will replace the East 120th Street and Euclid Avenue station on the Red Line. It will provide a direct link to University Circle from Tower City downtown, all the way to Cleveland Hopkins Airport.

The old station will remain in use until the new station is complete. The old station will then be moved several blocks south, to Mayfield Road at East 119th Street.

The new rapid station will cost $17.5 million and will take 18 to 24 months to complete. Federal funds from a grant will cover 80 percent of the costs.

The design includes a single platform headhouse and entrance plaza that complies with current ADA requirements. There will also be a heavy duty elevator and stairway from the street level up to the platform and waiting areas.
