Users and those who get the EBT card will start seeing some changes, and not in a good way.
(RNN/CNN) – Millions of Americans who rely on food stamps will soon see a change in benefits.
Starting Friday, on Nov. 1, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – also known as food stamps – will be cut.
More than 47 million people currently receive food stamps, which is about 15 percent of the U.S. population, up from 8.7 percent in 2007.
The average benefit per person now stands at a little more than $133 a month; that amount will be reduced.
According to the USDA, households of one to four people received a maximum SNAP allotment of $200, $367, $526 and $668, respectively. Starting Nov. 1, those families would get a decrease of $11, $20, $29 and $66.
The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has a breakdown of the estimated impact the SNAP reduction will have on individual states.
All total, the cuts add up to $5 billion.
Congress can halt the decision but, it’s unlikely they will do so.
