CLEVELAND – Cleveland will celebrate New Year’s Eve and welcome in 2014 with comedian and local native Drew Carey.

Carey will help count down to the new year during Cleveland Rocks New Year’s Eve 2013 – Electric Ice on Public Square downtown, according to a news release from Ohio Homecoming and the Cleveland New Year’s Eve Alliance.

“Cleveland is home and I can’t imagine a better place to spend the New Year,” said Drew Carey, in the written news release. “When I heard what the Ohio Homecoming group was planning, and that they wanted me to be part of it, my response was ‘hell yeah!’ So I’m happy to layer-up and party on Public Square with my fellow Clevelanders.”

Carey started as a stand-up comedian before becoming an actor and producer, the release says. He starred in the comedy The Drew Carey Show, which ran from 1995-2004, and served as the host and producer for Whose Line Is It Anyway?.

He was named host of The Price Is Right in July 2007, succeeding long-time host Bob Barker.

Planners recently announced electronic dance music band Krewella will headline the music for New Year’s Eve.

The free celebration starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 31. It will feature a festival-like atmosphere. Food trucks, a beer garden, live ice sculpting, fireworks and live music will lead up to midnight.

Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson and Cuyahoga County Executive Ed Fitzgerald will serve as honorary chairpersons.
