President Obama announced a new initiative in the pursuit of a cure for HIV at the National Institutes of Health on World AIDS Day on Sunday. The administration will be redirecting $100 million into this research project to eliminate HIV or at least put it in remission without lifelong therapy. President Obama says that the United States should be at the forefront of such discoveries.

According to reports, an estimated 2.3 million people were newly infected with HIV last year and 1.6 million people died of AIDS.
Thankfully President Obama succeeded in supporting and treating 6.7 million people living with HIV, allowing them greater access to anti-retroviral drugs. I will be proud to sign the PEPFAR Stewardship and Oversight Act to keep this program going strong. Looking ahead, it’s time for the world to come together to set new goals.” This act extends authorities related to global HIV/AIDS and promotes oversight of United States programs.
“We will begin to turn the tide of this epidemic together,” President Obama confidently stated.
