CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –
The National Collegiate Athletic Association will bring three championship events to Greater Cleveland in 2017 and 2018, the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission announced Wednesday.
The championship events awarded will contribute a combined $18 to $23 million of economic activity to the region and bring over 25,000 visitors to the area.
“We are once again thrilled that the NCAA has recognized Cleveland as an outstanding host for its championship events,” said David Gilbert, Greater Cleveland Sports Commission President and CEO. “These events will bring tens of millions of dollars of economic activity to Cleveland over the coming years. Just as importantly, these events allow Cleveland to impress thousands and thousands of people from all over the country. We believe that the domino effect of exposing these sports fan to Cleveland will be felt long into the future.”
The 2018 Division I Wrestling National Championship tops the list of awarded events. Hosted with the Mid-American Conference at Quicken Loans Arena from March 15-17, 2018 the event is expected to bring $15 to $20 million of economic activity to the region.
“The Division I Wrestling Championships is a tremendous opportunity to showcase Cleveland’s ability to host outstanding major sporting events,” said Gilbert. “Not only will the event infuse an estimated $15 to $20 million of economic activity into Greater Cleveland, it will highlight Cleveland’s vibrant downtown to tens of thousands of athletes, fans, parents and coaches. This is a significant announcement in the continued quest to make Cleveland the premier destination for sporting events in the country.”
