As of 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, there are about 6,000 FirstEnergy customers in Cuyahoga County without power. At one point, that number was more than 9,000.

According to the Illuminating Co. spokesperson, the bulk of the outages are in Garfield Heights and Cleveland.

The company’s spokesperson said that both Cleveland, Maple Heights and Garfield Heights are experiencing power outages for the same reason, pole-top fires.

Pole-top fires are caused by road salt spreading and coating the tops of poles and equipment. Electricity tracks through that salty, watery mix and makes contact with the pole. That creates smoldering and eventually causes a fire.
