The Indians will start the 2014 season in just a little more than a month. Work to prepare for opening day is already underway.
But Indians officials said during a tour of the ballpark on Tuesday that major repairs need to be done to the facility.
Progressive Field is turning 20 years old this year and it is beginning to show its age. Original equipment is wearing out and millions of dollars worth of capital repairs are looming: storm and sanitary water pumps, a 900-gallon hot water tank, replacement of heaters and fans in bathrooms and concessions stands and repairs and treatment of concrete throughout the ballpark.
“These areas I shared impact for comfort and fan safety,” said Chris Donahoe with the Cleveland Indians.
In May, Cuyahoga County voters will decide whether to renew the county’s sin tax to pay for maintenance for Progressive Field, Quicken Loans Arena and First Energy Stadium through 2035 — all properties Cleveland City Council members said belonged to the public and required funding.
