There’s a new program starting in one of the roughest parts of town. The young folks have come up with a new way of taking on thugs with guns.
These teens are growing up in the middle of fights, shootings, drugs and more.
Yet they are fighting back. Including a young woman, Shawtavia Hollis, from Garden Valley, whose cousin was shot to death.
“He got shot in our parking lot over something that really wasn’t called for,” Hollis said.
“What I want to accomplish is to see that kids have a safe place to be out of school time,” said another student, Channon Conner.
So they started the MyCom
program. My commitment, my community. They meet twice a week, a couple dozen teens and young adults near East 82nd Street and St. Clair Avenue.
The group is using computers and doing artwork, heading out to clean up neighborhoods and more. They’re recruiting more kids, and planning more programs.
