In the cold they stood outside the headquarters of Cleveland Police’s Second District Tuesday afternoon chanting “we want Keith” in support of Commander Keith Sulzer.

Sulzer, it was announced Monday, is stepping down after nearly seven years of leading the district. He will assume the rank of captain in charge of community policing.

Many in the crowd aren’t buying the explanation and blamed Cleveland’s new Police Chief Calvin Williams for Sulzer’s departure.

“This is a terrible way for the new chief to start out. He’s only been in office a few days actually and he’s alienated a whole community,” said resident Sue Gundich.

Cleveland Councilman Joe Cimperman was among those speaking in support of the commander.

“In the 16 years that I’ve been on city council, I’ve worked with 17 commanders and I’ve yet to meet a commander that is better than Commander Keith Sulzer,” said Cimperman.
