What parent hasn’t tried to sell magazines, wrapping paper or candy for their children?

Many schools rely on these fundraisers to help make ends meet with budget cuts.

“You shouldn’t punish kids for their parents,” says Melissa Gonzalez, a Willoughby-Eastlake parent. Her son was not allowed to participate in a school event because he didn’t sell any magazines. He had to watch, she says, from the bleachers.

She says she gives money to the school but just didn’t want to ask her neighbors to buy magazines again. Her other son goes to an elementary school, and last year there was an animal program but he wasn’t allowed to go.

“It’s just mean,” says Gonzalez. She did email the superintendent and he told her that he agrees that student rewards “should not be made at the expense of other students.” He also said that they are planning to change the fundraising procedures for next year.
