1. MISSING PLANE

Now there are four: The Australian ship Ocean Shield has picked up more fresh signals that officials hope are locator beacons from missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. A pair of underwater pulses were first detected over the weekend. Three days went by, then two more were recorded yesterday. Angus Houston, the head of the Australian operation, says they believe they’re searching in the right area, but they need to see some wreckage to confirm they’ve found the “final resting place of MH370.” At the very least, the four signals mean search teams can comb a much smaller area looking for debris from the flight.

2. UKRAINE CRISIS

Unrest in the east: There are claims and counterclaims as tensions rise in eastern Ukraine. Pro-Russian protesters have seized government buildings in the cities of Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv. Russia warned yesterday that any use of force could lead to civil war. Russia’s foreign ministry suggests “American experts” are helping Ukrainian forces prepare for a crackdown. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said yesterday that Russian forces and special agents have been behind the “chaos” in eastern Ukraine.

3. OSCAR PISTORIUS TRIAL

Emotional testimony: Track star Oscar Pistorius is back on the stand for a third day as he continues to tell his story of what happened on the night he fatally shot his girlfriend. The athlete sobbed in the witness stand yesterday as he described how, gripped by fear, he shot Reeva Steenkamp through a locked toilet door, thinking she was an intruder. He pleaded not guilty to murder when the high-profile trial opened early last month. It’s scheduled to continue until the middle of May.
