We’ve learned RTA will not add new safety equipment to buses to protect drivers.

RTA studied and tested shields on buses after attacks on drivers.  However, the final word is no.

There has been a lot of talk about adding shields or safety glass to protect RTA drivers, especially after some pretty violent attacks.

RTA investigated different kinds of shields, the cost and more. The RTA police chief tells us the agency found the shields are not needed and not all drivers wanted them.

“What we found is the shields aren’t needed, they’re not that effective and not in total demand. Plus, there just aren’t that many attacks on our operators,” said RTA Police Chief, John Joyce.

The head of the bus drivers union says some drivers didn’t want the shields, feeling too restricted.  Although, he still has some big concerns about driver safety.

Just last week a man was arrested and charged for threatening a driver and he had a small knife.
