Annexing

CLEVELAND – The room was packed and at times things got heated inside the Glennville Recreation Center. The community meeting centered around talks of a merger between Cleveland and East Cleveland.

“I’m not ready to give away my city,” said East Cleveland City Council president Barbara Thomas. “East Cleveland is a jewel.”

It was the first time anyone could remember that city councilors from both cities were in the room together talking about a merger.

“It would be foolish if we did not have that discussion,” said East Cleveland city councilor Nathaniel Martin. “The problems and the challenges that we are facing in East Cleveland is bringing about this discussion than anything else,” Martin said.

East Cleveland’s financial problems are well-documented, but Thomas said residents don’t want to be annexed by Cleveland even if it means the city would benefit.

“We have land, we have transportation, we have the library, we have all the good things that is necessary to make a good city,” she said.
