CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Foundation is holding another FREE Saturday event.
The foundation’s May gift to the community is a FREE day at four Wade Oval institutions in University Circle: Cleveland Botanical Garden, Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Natural History and Western Reserve Historical Society.
Each institution is offering something unique to visitors May 24, the beginning of the Memorial Day weekend. They will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“We are pleased that our May centennial gift to the community will make the first-class institutions on Wade Oval available to all Greater Clevelanders,” said Robert E. Eckardt, executive vice president of the Cleveland Foundation. “This concentration of cultural institutions is unmatched anywhere in the world. As part of Memorial Day weekend festivities, we invite the community to take advantage of this cultural heart of our city.”

2. St. Louis Blues, 1929 RKO/Sack Amusements FREE Screening (one of several shorts), Feb. 26th, 7:30pm, Rock Hall - This sixteen-minute short film shot in Astoria, Queens, New York City, is blues singer Bessie Smith’s only screen role. In it, she plays a long-suffering wife of an uncaring gambler. Co-produced by W.C. Handy, author of the title song, the film also features Isabelle Washington (sister of actress Fredi Washington) who plays the “other woman.” Pianist James P. Johnson and the Hall Johnson Choir accompanied Smith and added to the overwhelming pathos of her singing, making this dramatized interpretation of the blues a true film classic.2 of 6
