The Cleveland Metropolitan School District has become a model for social and emotional learning and it’s a result of the SuccessTech shootings nearly seven years ago.
The SuccessTech tragedy, in which a 14 year old student wounded four people then took his own life, prompted the school district to implement a series of social emotional programs, called ‘ Humanware.’ One of them is PATHS, Providing Alternative Thinking Strategies.
Students in grades Pre-K through five are taught how to recognize and manage their emotions and resolve problems peacefully.
“We stop and calm down, we think about the problem, and then we find a way to solve it,” fifth grader Ty’Shari Otis-Johnson said.
