CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –
A woman who lost her young grandchild in Cleveland’s deadliest fire is working to keep the victims’ memories alive.
On May 21, 2005, a woman and eight children were killed in a house fire on East 87th Street.
7-year-old Faith Jones, 12-year-old Shauntavia Mitchell, 13-year-old Miles Golden Cockfield, 13-year-old Antwon Jackson Jr., 14-year-old Moses William Jr., 15-year-old Devonte Carter, 12-year-old Maleeya Williams, and 33-year-old Media Carter all died from smoke inhalation during a birthday sleep over.
Antun Lewis was convicted of setting the fatal fire, and will be sentenced next month. Lewis actually had two trials and was convicted in both. While prosecutors have no clear motive, they say Lewis used gasoline to set the fire in order to get back at one of the occupants of the home over a possible unpaid drug debt.
