By mid-summer the old Cleveland Indians ballpark should be up and running for both kids and adults to play on.
The city is spending about $6 million to rehab the field that not only Babe Ruth played on, but also the city’s public works director as well.
That director would be Michael Cox. “I played ball here as a kid,” said Cox with a huge grin on his face. “It’s a great thing to happen for the city of Cleveland,” he continued.
Nick Nerone, the project manager, said they are trying to restore the field down to a tenth of an inch of its original dimensions.
With right field being shallow, they’ve constructed a 45-foot fence that will also stop baseballs from being introduced to cars.
The historic field is the place where Babe Ruth hit his 500th home run, Joe DiMaggio hit in this 56th straight game and the last place the Indians won the world series at home in 1920. Then, it was called “Dunn Field, but changed back when Mr. Dunn died.
