Coast-Guard

Two people were cited for what they had with them on a boat Thursday afternoon near Mentor Harbor.

A Coast Guard boarding team member at Station Fairport noticed empty beer cans while conducting a routine safety check. The team member felt it was necessary to administer a field sobriety test on the boat’s operator, which the operator failed.

A passenger was discovered to have marijuana in his possession. He was issued a civil fine.

This happened one day before the start of a three-day law enforcement initiative called Operation Dry Water.

“Operation Dry Water is a national multi-agency operation focused on deterring boating under the influence,” said Chief Petty Officer Nicholas Alphonso. “If you are boating under the influence, we will find you. We would rather cite you for a violation and get you off of the water, than have to tell your family you’ve been killed in a boating accident.”
