Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay $82,000 in restitution

Nagin was sentenced Wednesday in federal court by U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan.

Prosecutors are pressing for a stiff sentence as former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin prepares to learn how much time he will serve for convictions on charges of bribery, money laundering and other crimes.

Nagin arrived at court just before 9 a.m. His sentencing hearing before U.S. District Judge Helen Berrigan is set for 10 a.m.

Nagin was convicted on Feb. 12 of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars from businessmen who wanted work from the city or Nagin’s support for projects – both before and after Hurricane Katrina. The bribes came in the form of money, free vacation trips and truckloads of free granite for the mayor’s family business.

Some of the charges carry possible 20-year sentences.
