DISCIPLINE600

Proverbs 23:13 NLT says, “Don’t fail to discipline your children. They won’t die if you spank them.” Apparently, a New York court agrees with Scripture.

Last week, a Suffolk County father was let off the hook after being accused of negligence for spanking his 8-year-old son at a party for swearing at an adult.

After appealing the first ruling, the Appellate Division of State Supreme Court dismissed a child neglect proceeding stemming from an October 2012 incident, ruling that open-handed spanking is “reasonable use of force.”

The father, who physically chastised the child twice—once at the gathering and again at home—was originally said to have struck his son with a belt on his “buttocks, legs and arms.”

But he denied using a belt.

Neither the child nor the father’s names have been released to the public.

“The father’s open-handed spanking of the child as a form of discipline after he heard the child curse at an adult was a reasonable use of force and, under the circumstances presented here, did not constitute excessive corporal punishment,” the appeals court ruling said, according to a Newsday report.
