‘Exodus: Gods And Kings’ Film Sparks Backlash For Whitewashing Characters

Hollywood has faced a great deal of criticism for its long history of casting white actors to portray minority characters. “Exodus: Gods and Kings” is the most recent film to face backlash regarding the portrayal of characters from the Bible and the entertainment industry. Director Ridley Scott’s film has so far been met with a furious Twitter storm armed with the its very own hashtag: #BoycottExodusMovie. The “Exodus” cast’s leading lineup of kings, queens and prophets are all played by white actors such as Christian Bale and Sigourney Weaver, but the the slaves, servants and low-class civilians are played by actors of color. Read more.


Jay Z Advocates for Prison Reform During California Concert

During the most recent stop of the On the Run Tour in Los Angeles, Jay Z took to the stage and made a political statement with regard to California’s Proposition 47. “California, build more schools, less prisons,” the rapper said Sunday, right before starting his “Hard Knock Life” song. Prop 47 will be included on California’s November ballot, and aims to reduce the penalty for some nonviolent crimes by changing their designations from felonies to misdemeanors, which could result in shorter sentences. Read more.

NBC White House Correspondent Chris Jansing appeared on MSNBC’s The Reid Report today with a report on President Obama at the U.S.-African Leaders Summit. Unfortunately, there was just one tiny little problem with what she said: she accidentally said that the president’s from Kenya. Oops. In talking about the White House hopes for Africa becoming part of Obama’s legacy, Jansing said, “Yeah, the fact that he’s from Kenya, and that fact that when he was elected there were expectations from the African continent that he would do great things for them.” Read more.


Eric Garner Not Killed by Chokehold, Say Police Unions, Despite All Evidence to the Contrary

“It was not a chokehold,” said Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association president Pat Lynch, as reported by DNAinfo, at a press conference today directed at “police haters.” “He was a big man who had to be brought to the ground to be placed under arrest by shorter police officers.”
