While millions have jumped on board in support of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, some complain that it is a
waste of water and that “more important things” need our attention.
But Grammy-nominated solo recording artist Erica Campbell, 42, recently accepted the icy dare and defended
her choice to do so.
“I wanted you to know why I accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge,” she said in an Aug 27 video after being
doused with bone-chilling cold water alongside her sister and stylist Thomasina “Goo Goo” Atkins.
“It’s because I found out what this disease really does and what these families are suffering with.”
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells
and pathways in the brain and spinal cord. When these cells die, voluntary muscle control and movement dies
with them. Patients in the later stages of the disease are totally paralyzed, yet in most cases, their minds
remain sharp and alert.
“Can you imagine sitting in one spot for 15 minutes, not moving anything, not scratching your nose, not
touching your phone, not changing the channel, just sitting there, left alone with your thoughts?” asked
Campbell.
