What does service mean in the African American community? To Grammy-award winning singer Florence LaRue, it means inspiring others through music.

To philanthropist and business executive Earl W. Stafford, it means building communities and empowering individuals to transform lives at home and abroad.

It means reaching across racial and economic lines to alter a community to former Mayor of Philadelphia W. Wilson Goode, or diversifying American media to broadcast executive Ronald H. Brewington.

To gospel vocalist and television host Bobby Jones, service means combining the powers of music and media to spread a message of faith. To renowned obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Sharon Malone, service means advocating for women’s health and championing citizens’ rights in support of her husband, Attorney General Eric Holder.

On September 26, 2014, these and hundreds of other African American HistoryMakers across the nation will continue to serve their communities during the 5th Annual Back to School With The HistoryMakers program, as they return to classrooms to encourage students to COMMIT to excellence and finishing their education.
