Voter Study-ap-9-13-12

1. Senate battle could go on and on

Brace yourself: We may not have closure on the all-important battle for the Senate for a while.

Republicans need a net pickup of six seats to take control. The GOP is favored to pick up three Democratic seats: West Virginia, Montana and South Dakota. Additionally, polls show Republican Tom Cotton building a lead over Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor in Arkansas. If Cotton wins, Republicans would need just two more seats, assuming they don’t lose any they’re defending, such as Georgia and Kentucky.

Sounds simple, right? Not exactly. In Louisiana, where Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu is vulnerable, there will be a Dec. 6 runoff unless a candidate gets more than 50% of the vote. The Georgia open-seat race between Democrat Michelle Nunn and Republican David Perdue could also be headed to a runoff, but not until Jan. 6, after the new Congress has convened.
