BOY SHOOTING

During a news conference at the Justice Center Monday Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson offered condolences to the family of Tamir Rice.

“I want us to remember that a 12-year-old child lost a life,” said Mayor Frank Jackson.

12-yea- old Tamir was shot Saturday afternoon by a Cleveland police officer responding to a 911 call that someone was waving around a gun at the Cudell Recreation Center. From the 911 call: “It’s probably fake, but you know what, it’s scaring the *expletive* out of people.”

From the 911 call: “He’s right there by the youth center and he keeps pulling it in and out of his pants. I don’t know if it’s real or not.”

Police say when officers arrived, they located Rice and advised him to raise his hands. However, the boy did not comply with the officers’ orders and reached to his waistband. That’s when, according to police, they fired two shots.

It’s unclear whether officers were ever told by dispatch that the boy may have a fake gun.

The boy was transported to MetroHealth Hospital. He died at 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

On Monday, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the torso with injuries of a major vessel, intestines, and pelvis. The manner is homicide.

The names of the two police officers involved in the shooting, both white, have not been released. The officers are said to be very distraught and have since been placed on administrative leave.
