Floyd Mayweather has been sued by the mother of his three kids after the athlete told Katie Couric she was on drugs during their domestic violence incident in 2010.
Josie Harris filed a defamation lawsuit Tuesday, asking for $20 million in damages and claiming intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligent infliction of emotional distress, CNN reports. In September 2010, the boxer was arrested after Harris was beaten in the family’s Las Vegas home. His children provided written reports of the incident, stating Harris was dragged by her hair, kicked, and hit by Mayweather.
She denied being a drug abuser or drug addict, and her attorney said in the court filing: “It was not Mayweather’s ‘restraint’ of Harris that caused her serious injuries, rather it was his beating of her.”
Mayweather pleaded guilty the following year to a reduced charge of misdemeanor battery and two counts of harassment. He served two-thirds of his 90 day prison sentence.
This isn’t the only domestic abuse case the fighter has faced. Former fiancée Shantel Jackson sued Mayweather over claims she suffered abuse during their seven-year relationship.
In several interviews following the incident, the fighter has maintained his innocence. When asked about the incident during an interview with Katie Couric last month, Mayweather said he was restraining Harris, since she allegedly struggled with substance abuse.
He told CNN’s Rachel Nichols in September there were “no pictures, just hearsay and allegations.”
He told Yahoo’s Couric last month: “Did I kick, stomp, and beat someone? No, that didn’t happen. … Did I restrain a woman that was on drugs? Yes, I did. So if they say that’s domestic violence, then, you know what? I’m guilty. I’m guilty of restraining someone.”
The boxer is on the verge of making a reported $200 million for his fight with Manny Pacquiao. After defeating the Philippine native, Mayweather maintained his 48-0 record and even showed an ESPN reporter a check for $100 million.
