Just weeks after his controversial acquittal in the shooting death of an unarmed African-American couple, Cleveland police officer Michael Brelo faces an assault charge in an incident involving his brother, reports Cleveland.

Police issued a warrant for Brelo’s arrest Wednesday, according to papers filed in Rocky River Municipal Court, writes the news outlet.

Besides assault, he was also charged with disorderly conduct and misdemeanor assault, the report says.

Via Cleveland:

Brelo punched his brother, Mark Brelo in the head, face and body on May 27, according to the criminal complaint.

He was charged with assault following interviews with him and his brother, court records said. Michael Brelo turned himself in at the Bay Village Police station about 1 p.m. Wednesday….

A citation attached to Mark Brelo’s arrest report says that he was drunk and showed “obvious signs of (a) recent physical altercation.” He was only wearing one shoe and was knocking on the doors of several Bay Village homes before he woke a resident.

Bay Village police department officials did not immediately respond to messages from the news site seeking comment.

Protests erupted last month after a Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court judge acquitted Brelo of manslaughter charges in a trial involving a 2012 police chase and shooting that left Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams dead. He fired 49 out of a total of 137 shots at the couple after climbing onto the hood of their stopped vehicle.

Sound familiar? We hope Brelo does not turn out to be another George Zimmerman, who has consistently been in the news on a string of bizarre cases since he was acquitted in 2013 in the death of unarmed Black teen Trayvon Martin.
