President Obama will eulogize Rev. Clementa Pinckney and eight other worshipers who were killed last week during a Bible study at an African-American church in Charleston.
First lady Michelle Obama will also attend Friday’s service, as will Vice President Biden and his wife, Jill…..”NOTE- SERVICE WILL START AT 10am EST”
“The focus of the President’s remarks will be on celebrating the lives of those who were lost on that tragic night last week,” said White House spokesman Josh Earnest.
A bipartisan congressional delegation is making the journey to Charleston as well, led by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. Boehner said lawmakers want to “pay our respects to the families of the victims and express the condolences of the American people.”
Pinckney–who also was a state senator–and the eight others were shot to death June 17 inside Mother Emanuel AME, one of the most historic churches in the country. The alleged killer was captured the next day in Shelby, NC.
In addition to delivering the eulogy, Obama will also meet privately with relatives of the shooting victims.
Thursday night, hundreds of mourners streamed into Mother Emanuel for a wake for Pinckney. Funerals for two of the other victims–Sharonda Coleman-Singleton and Ethel Lance–were held in separate services earlier in the day.
