Serena Williams is amazing.
She crushed Maria Sharapova in the semi-finals of Wimbledon on Thursday, marking her 17th straight victory over Sharapova.
The 6-2, 6-4 win comes 11 years after Sharapova last beat Williams. Since that time, Williams has won 14 Grand Slam titles. She has won 20 overall, inching closer to the all-time record of 24 set by Margaret Court in 1974.
At 33 years old, Williams is the best female athlete of our era.
Her southwest London win on Thursday carries her to the Wimbledon final against 21-year-old Garbine Muguruza.
Aside from Williams’ athletic dominance, her mental focus played a huge part in her thrashing of Sharapova. “Whenever I know I have to play Maria, I know I have to be focused because she wasn’t the best in the world for no reason,” Williams told reporters, referenceing Sharapova’s former ranking of No. 1.
Now Williams has her work cut out for her.
Her next opponent Muguruza beat her at the French Open last year.
