Special Olympics Ambassador Joe Haden says the “R word” should be eliminated from our vocabulary. His close relationship to his younger brother reminds us that we need to put our actions before our words.
26 year old Browns player, Joe Haden has been fiercely protecting others ever since, at age 9, he saved his 4 year old brother from drowning in a pool. His brother, who has a cognitive disorder affecting his speech, inspires Joe to play hard and work hard for others.
Haden is the first NFL player to be named a Special Olympics Global Ambassador. Additionally, he’s been working with the movement Spread the Word to End the Word toward the elimination of the “R-word.” Haden told ESPN news, “The R-word is hurtful, hateful and ignorant. Like the N-word, it should not be part of our language.”
