Actress Sanaa Lathan arrives at the prem

Sanaa Lathan is set to stun viewers in next month’s new romance drama The Perfect Guy, alongside actors Morris Chestnut and Michael Ealy.

Lathan is known for her roles in many films, often with mostly Black casts, but while speaking to The Huffington Post recently, she gave her candid opinions about the way Black actors are regarded in Hollywood.

Lathan noted that high box office sales proves wider audiences are interested in movies with mainly-Black casts, but the industry hasn’t quite caught up to that reality.

She told The Huffington Post:

“I think Hollywood has a ways to go. Certainly in the last couple of years with ‘Think Like A Man’ and even recently with ‘Straight Outta Compton‘ doing well,” she said. “But I think the language needs to change, the language about ‘Oh, this is an Urban film or this is a niche film.’ No, these are Hollywood films. And it’s to marginalize us because it’s like some kind of a freak thing that we’ve made all this money off this movie. That’s a problem for me.”

As noted by the Huffington Post, a 2013 UCLA study revealed that 94 percent of film studio heads were White.

Lathan told The Huffington Post:

“I think we need to come into the 21st century. And films should represent the world that we live in,” she said. “And right now when you look at Hollywood it’s not an accurate representation of the diversity of the world that we live in.”

We couldn’t agree more.
