The City of Baltimore is looking to reach a $6.4 million settlement with the family of Freddie Gray.
ray, 25, died April 19, a week after he suffered a neck injury while in police custody.
Six officers have been charged in connection with Gray’s death. Any financial settlement would have to be approved by the city Board of Estimates, which next meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
According to Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake’s office, the family would receive $2.8 million during the city’s current fiscal year and $3.6 million in the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2016. The settlement would resolve all civil claims related to the city, the Baltimore Police Department, individual officers and anyone else who might be considered responsible in connection with Gray’s death.
The mayor’s office said that the settlement does not represent an admission of guilt by any of the parties potentially linked to Gray’s death. The settlement also has nothing to do with the current criminal proceedings against the six officers charged in connection to Gray’s death.
“The proposed settlement agreement going before the Board of Estimates should not be interpreted as a judgment on the guilt or innocence of the officers facing trial,” Rawlings-Blake said in a statement.
