On Tuesday, Nov. 24, The Color Purple’s Jennifer Hudson and Cynthia Erivo set the Good Morning America stage ablaze with a powerful performance of the title song.
The show, currently in previews, officially debuts Dec. 10 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in New York.
The musical score of the Oprah Winfrey–produced show is by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. It combines jazz, ragtime, gospel and blues.
“Wow, it’s such a beautiful experience. I’m having such an amazing time,” Hudson told GMA’s Robin Roberts. “I feel like I’m in theater school right now. I’m learning as much as I can and I’ve been blessed to work with all these beautiful people.”
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker and the 1985 Steven Spielberg film, the musical’s book is by playwright Marsha Norman.
