Tonya Couch, the Texas mom whose son Ethan was infamously “diagnosed” with a case of “affluenza” in relation to a 2013 fatal drunk driving accident, was indicted Thursday for helping her son escape to Mexico.

Ethan Couch was 16 on June 15, 2013, when he plowed into a group of people on a roadside in Burleson, Texas, killing four and injuring two others. The case struck up a national conversation about privilege when a judge sentenced him to 10 years of probation instead of jail time after Couch admitted to the crime and was found with a blood alcohol level three times the limit.

Tonya Couch faces charges of hindering apprehension of a felon and money laundering, said Samantha Jordan, spokeswoman for the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office, who spoke to CNN.

The charges stem from a Mexico trip that Ethan Couch and his mother Tonya took in December while Couch was serving 10 years on probation for intoxication manslaughter.

Court officials ordered Couch to stay away from alcohol, but in December, a video posted online appeared to show him at a party where alcohol was served. Police believe Couch and his mother fled the States before a hearing could determine whether he violated his probation terms.

Authorities found Couch and his mother in a Pacific resort town on December 28 and extradited them back to the United States.

Ethan Couch is currently 19 years old and serving a two-year sentence in the Tarrant County Lon Evans Correction Center, writes NBC News.
