In upholding an affirmative action program at the University of Texas, the U.S. Supreme Court ruling Thursday provided some reassurance to the nation’s colleges that continue to consider an applicant’s race in admissions.

Reactions to the 4-3 decision have been mixed. Here are some responses.

“We are not a country that guarantees equal outcomes, but we do strive to provide an equal shot to everybody. And that’s what was upheld today.” – President Barack Obama.

“This is affirmative action gone wild.” – Justice Samuel Alito, who wrote the dissent from the court’s 4-3 decision.

“Today’s ruling proves that not only is affirmative action still necessary to promote racial equality in America, it is constitutional.” – Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, D-Md.

“Diversity benefits communities, schools and students from all backgrounds, and research has shown that more diverse organizations make better decisions with better results.” – Education Secretary John B. King Jr.
