The Team USA swimmers who claimed to have been the victims of an alleged armed robbery in Rio de Janeiro, fabricated the incident, a source close to the Brazilian police department confirmed to NBC.

The revelation comes as three of the American swimmers were expected to give statements to Brazilian police on Thursday about how they were reportedly robbed in Rio de Janeiro, a day after authorities pulled two of the Olympians off a plane at the airport.

U.S. Olympic officials say Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz, who were pulled from a Houston-bound flight by federal agents Wednesday night at Rio’s international airport, were released after being detained for nearly four hours by Brazilian authorities. USOC spokesperson Patrick Sandusky said the duo were released with the understanding they will cooperate with the police.

Two representatives from the U.S. consulate and an USOC official arrived at the airport shortly after the swimmers were stopped from leaving the country.
