An African-American church in South Carolina has said good-bye to its mortgage, thanks to a $500,000 gift from an anonymous donor.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the Campbell Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church burned its mortgage in a ceremony Saturday. The Bluffton church was able to pay the mortgage because of the donation, which was made in May.

Church members cheered as AME leaders used a lighter to burn the mortgage document. The church cost $1.4 million to build and was dedicated in 2004.

The church plans now to refurbish its historic chapel, which was built in 1853 and sold to freed slaves in 1870s.

State Sen. Clementa Pinckney once was church’s senior pastor. He was killed in 2015 along with eight parishioners at Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston.
