A Summit County sheriff’s deputy was stabbed with a pair of scissors today by a 12-year-old boy at an Akron alternative school, authorities said.

Deputy Dale Grugle was being treated in Akron City Hospital for a 2-inch-deep wound in his chest near his abdomen. Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Scott Cottle said the wound is not life-threatening, but that the officer will be kept overnight for observation.

Cottle said the incident occurred at 9:45 a.m. when Grugle was called into the teachers lounge at the Bridges Learning Center in East Akron, where he works in security.

“There was a boy who has been a problem for the last couple of days,” Cottle said. “They were talking to the boy when he picked up a pair of scissors off a table and threw it at the two men. The principal avoided the scissors, but Grugle was struck.”
