President Barack Obama got a hometown welcome Saturday night as he continued to make his case against voting Republican in a last-ditch effort to try to save his former Senate seat, advising any wavering supporters: “Don’t let them get you down.”

“In three days you have the chance to once again say what?” Obama yelled into the microphone, cupping his hand around his ear and leaning forward.

“Yes we can!” the crowd shouted.

Obama was trying to energize Illinois voters to cast their ballots Tuesday for Democrat Alexi Giannoulias, who is locked in a tight race with Republican Rep. Mark Kirk.

“We need you to get out to vote,” Obama said.

The president was enveloped with cheers as he stepped onto the stage in Midway Plaisance Park for a rally that seemed tailored to recapture the magic of his victory speech nearly two years ago in Grant Park. Saturday’s crowd of an estimated 35,000 people, the largest Obama has had as he’s hit the campaign trail over the past couple of weeks, stretched all the way west from the stage.
