MENTOR, OH (WOIO) – Students in Mentor are mourning the loss of a 16-year-old classmate.

The Cuyahoga County Coroner’s office says preliminary results show Brandon Shima died of natural causes.  Other tests will be back in two to three months, possibly sooner.

Shima was found dead in his home Thursday afternoon.

The high school says Shima was out of school all week and sick in the hospital. Initially, MRSA was thought to be the cause.

The school is taking precautions, and sent football players home information on how to identify symptoms of the antibiotic-resistant strain of staph infection.

The Mentor football team is scheduled to face St. Ed’s in a play-off game on Saturday. Shima’s teammates are in a state of disbelief, but want to continue their season in honor of Shima.

“I think a lot of kids are still shocked, especially the teammates who knew him really well,” said team captain Joe Kasper. “He knew his role on the team, he was a great teammate and I can’t speak enough praise about him.”

“We’ll go out there and we’ll give that effort like he would want us to and like everybody wants us to,” said MHS Head Coach Steve Trivisonno.
