The Cuyahoga County Public Library reported Tuesday that 2009 was a record year for circulation and customer visits, despite reduced operating hours and cutbacks in branches.

Cardholders borrowed 19 million items from the library’s 28 branches, a 7 percent increase from the previous year. Of that total, 57 percent were print items, a 3 percent increase.

Although Sunday operating hours were reduced to seven branches in September because of state funding cuts, the number of customer visits exceeded 7.6 million last year, an increase of 232,422.

Hennen’s American Public Library Ratings for 2009 ranked Cuyahoga County Public Library as the No. 1 library in the nation among cities exceeding 500,000 in population. The ratings are determined on service quality and operational efficiency related to staffing, materials and circulation.
