Former New York Giants star Plaxico Burress spoke to Bryant Gumbel recently about how his race may have affected the jury’s decision in the 2009 gun possession case that landed him in prison for two years.

Burress was charged with illegally carrying and firing a gun at a Manhattan nightclub in 2009. The former star told Gumbel that he expected the jurors to be compassionate about the incident, but later realized that he was wrong about that assumption.

“Half of those people had no idea who I was,” he said. “They just saw an African-American over there sitting around making a lot of money carrying a gun into a club that shot [himself].”
