The murder case involving a former social worker who allegedly threw her newborn daughter out of an apartment building in New York has investigators looking back on the death of another child the mother had in 2008.
According to the New York Times, Jennifer Berry, 33, was arrested on second-degree murder charges on Tuesday. Police said Berry threw the newborn out of the window into an alley behind her Yonkers apartment – with the umbilical cord still attached. Police informed reporters the baby was still alive before the incident, and died of blunt force trauma from the fall.
Currently, prosecutors are looking back on the 2008 death of a boy Berry gave birth to who died at two weeks old. An autopsy revealed the baby died of sudden infant death syndrome, but in light of the current incident, officials plan to investigate further, said Lucian Chalfen, a spokesman for the Westchester County district attorney’s office.
Reports are mixed about Berry hiding her recent pregnancy, but her boyfriend believed she had miscarried. She gave birth to the child on Monday, the day before the baby was found dead.
The New York Times reports:
Mr. Chalfen declined to release the child’s name or disclose any other information about the review. Detective Lt. Patrick McCormack, a spokesman for the Yonkers Police Department, said in an email that officials there were “aware of the N.Y.C. incident, and our detectives are working with N.Y.P.D. at this time.” He declined to comment further.
Berry worked for New York City Administration for Children’s Services for under a year in July 2007, with most of her time spent in training. She left the job weeks before she gave birth to her son in January 2008.
Her next court case is scheduled for Monday.
