Cleveland Pushes Forward in Bid for Professional Women’s Soccer Team

Cleveland Pro Soccer has unveiled a bold plan to bring professional women’s soccer to Northeast Ohio. The group seeks to secure an NWSL expansion franchise and build a 13,000-seat stadium downtown. The stadium would anchor a $150 million development project.
Leaders behind the effort say the stadium would host more than just pro soccer. It could also feature concerts, high school championships, and college tournaments. The proposed site sits near Cleveland State University, making it a central and accessible location.
Supporters believe the city is primed for a women’s pro team. They cite strong fan interest, corporate backing, and Cleveland’s growing sports culture. Other cities have landed NWSL teams through similar grassroots efforts.
The group has already begun pitching local officials and investors. They’re seeking a public-private partnership to make the stadium a reality. Roughly $90 million would come from private investment. The remaining $60 million would require public support.
NWSL officials have not announced a decision. However, Cleveland is one of several cities currently under review. If approved, the team could debut as early as 2026.
This movement could make Cleveland a national leader in women’s sports.
