Alexander Sinclair, a former Cleveland police officer from Madison Township, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Wednesday, May 28. The charges stem from a disturbing incident that unfolded on October 31 outside Riverview Elementary School in Painesville, Ohio.

Prosecutors said Sinclair rammed his SUV into his wife’s car while their child sat in the backseat. He then fired a gun into the vehicle. A nearby sheriff’s deputy intervened. Authorities said Sinclair tried to wrestle the deputy’s gun away during the confrontation.

At the time of the incident, Sinclair was under a protection order. He had been indicted on several charges, including kidnapping, aggravated robbery, and violating that order.

In April, Sinclair pleaded guilty to kidnapping, abduction, endangering children, assault, and inducing panic.

Prosecutors pushed for a 12-year sentence. Sinclair’s attorneys requested six. A judge ultimately handed down 10 years.

His legal team blamed the outburst on an emotional breakdown. They said Sinclair had just learned his wife was romantically involved with another man on their anniversary.

Sinclair addressed the court, calling the shooting a moment he’ll regret forever. “If I could change things, I would,” he said. “Sadly, I cannot.”
