A diet that is heart healthy, boosts brain function and can reduce risk of stroke and kidney stones? That trifecta belongs to the DASH diet plan, which is more of a way of eating than an actual weigh loss diet plan. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension and is available free from the National Institutes of Health’s website.

This blueprint for healthy eating contains foods readily available from your local grocer, without the brand name of a famous diet attached, and it is has actually been shown to reduce high blood pressure, and prevent heart attacks and strokes. The recent issue of Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes adds credibility to this diet withs tudy results from Johns Hopkins University, the latest research of the benefits of the DASH diet.

Study participants who were given the DASH diet decreased their 1ten-year risk of heart disease by 18 percent over those who ate a more typical American diet; and by 11 percent over those who ate a diet rich in fruits and vegetables but otherwise similar to a typical American diet. The benefits were even great for African American partipants, who saw their risk decline by 22 percent when on the diet.
