When director Spike Lee screened his latest joint, Red Hook Summer, at Sundance in January, some hoped the film would mark a triumphant return to his indie-moviemaking roots. But initial reaction to the self-financed effort was mixed at best. With an unexpected plot twist near its end, the film divided early audiences.

This trailer, though, looks to be a winner. It provides an intriguing taste of the forthcoming film, which is a coming-of-age story about Flik Royale (Jules Brown), an Atlanta boy who spends a summer in Red Hook, Brooklyn, under the thumb of his pious grandfather Bishop Enoch Rouse (Clarke Peters, who recently played Lester Freamon in HBO’s The Wire). Other cast members include Nate Parker, James Ransone, Colman Domingo and Lee (who reprises the role of Mookie from Do the Right Thing).

Watch the trailer of Red Hook Summer below, and catch Lee’s latest film in theaters this August.
