Has Deshaun Watson Played His Last Game In Cleveland?

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson recently suffered an injury setback, and now fans are wondering if the Browns could void the remaining two years left on his current contract.

Watson, who has already suffered two season-ending injuries in just three years in Cleveland, recently re-ruptured his Achilles. He had surgery to repair it, again, last Thursday.

Watson’s latest injury means that he will miss significant playing time in 2025. Some believe Watson will never start a game for the Cleveland Browns ever again.

But, is that likely?

According to Dawgs By Nature, it’s certainly possible.

“Due to the nature of NFL contracts, on-the-field injuries and approved training activity injuries are protected from being considered violations of contracts,” wrote Jared K Mueller. “Cleveland has benefitted from insuring Watson’s contract, including around $4 million in salary cap space last year and a much larger amount projected in 2025 and 2026.”

What’s that famous Jim Carrey Dumb & Dumber line? “So you’re telling me there’s a chance!?”

Now, before we put the cart before the horse here, there are a few questions that need to be answered before the Browns can just cut ties with Watson. First, how did Watson “roll his ankle”? While the Browns do have the right to protect their business from non-football related injuries, things would need to be proven before contracts can just be voided.

Plus, there’s the precedent. There simply isn’t much information out there regarding voided contracts due to non-football injuries. And with the logistics and nuances of Watson’s fully guaranteed contract, it seems like it would be tough to void the remaining two years on his current deal.
